Wigs

The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) is finally deciding to ban two cancer-causing chemicals, which have been known for decades to be harmful to human health. Specifically, the EPA will ban the use of Trichloroethylene (TCE) and Perchloroethylene, also known as (PERC) sometime next year. Trichloroethylene (TCE) is a manufactured chemical that can be found in many household and commercial products including, dry cleaning spot removal products, metal cleaners, degreasers, carpet cleaners, paint removers, spray adhesives, cleaning wipes, adhesives for lace wigs, and cleaning products.

The second chemical scheduled to be banned in products is Perchloroethylene or (PERC), which is primarily found in dry cleaning solvents but can also be found in a variety of consumer products like metal degreasers, spot removers, paint removers, wig adhesives, water repellents, silicone lubricants, fabric finishers, wood cleaners, shoe polish, and even some printing inks. A lot of women wear lace-front wigs as protective styles, during cancer treatments, or to simply change up their hair styles. Please be mindful that too many wig adhesives contain TCE. TCE is a neurotoxin and a carcinogen that can cause a variety of adverse health effects, including liver toxicity and kidney toxicity, which can cause liver and kidney cancer. If you frequently wear wigs, switch to wig tape, glueless wigs, or adjustable straps to help secure your wigs. Do not compromise your health to wear your favorite wig!

There are steps you can take to keep you and your family safe from these toxic chemicals. First, start by embracing the concept of “conscious consumerism” which means purchasing products from companies or brands that embrace sustainability and use eco-friendly ingredients. Also, you really must read the ingredients on labels before bringing them into your home. If you frequently take your clothes to a dry cleaner, you should choose a dry cleaner that uses eco-friendly cleaning agents to clean your clothes. Or you can clean your clothes at home with the Dryel At-Home Dry Cleaner, which is a safer, non-toxic, and sustainable option for clothes that require dry cleaning.
