Did you know the average household cleaner has more than 10 toxic chemicals? I remember resorting to wearing a face mask to clean my bathroom and shower. However, now that most of us have had to wear masks for protection from COVID-19, I am no longer willing to use strong chemicals in my home that make me sneeze, wheeze, or cough.
According to the Environmental Working Group (EWG), a non-profit organization, dedicated to protecting human health and the environment, the cleaning products that we use in our homes can cause unhealthy indoor air. In fact, EWG tested 21 commonly used cleaning products such as, air fresheners and multipurpose cleaning sprays, and found that they released more than 450 chemicals into the air. Some of the chemicals and compounds EWG discovered were linked to asthma, developmental and reproductive harm, and some chemicals were associated with some forms of cancer with long-term exposure.
People with power in government and industry make decisions that advance their self-interest and profit margins ahead of what’s good for consumers. We need change!
Most of us assume the cleaning products that we use in our homes are safe. Unfortunately, that is not the case! To make matters worse, some products release dangerous chemicals and gases, like volatile organic compounds (VOCs). VOCs are gases that are released into the air from products. Some of these gases and chemicals are harmful by themselves, including some that cause cancer. In addition, they can react with other gases and form other air pollutants after they linger in the air. Frequent exposure to VOC's can increase the risk of asthma, wheezing, eye irritation, throat irritation, dizziness, nausea, and an increased risk of cardiovascular health problems.
When you use safer cleaning products like our plant-based products, you can have peace of mind that you are maintaining the cleanliness of your home, yoga mat, or exercise equipment without sacrificing air quality and your health.
